Professional, reliable, kind and fun to engage with, Joanne is a real treasure in our literary community. - Karina M. Szczurek

I studied (conscientiously) art, psychology and creative writing, but most of my life lessons – learned hard and fast – have been earned in the field, working as an artist, waitress, mother of three, group facilitator at a psychiatric clinic, and as an editor and writing teacher.
As a writer, I cut my teeth on short stories and articles, published in ‘O’ Magazine, Real Simple, Fair lady, Itch and various anthologies like Bad Company and Twist.
I then wrote my first thriller, introducing Rae Valentine – feisty, sexy, resourceful, ex-addict amputee Private Investigator ready for anything. Divine Justice will be released in the USA in 2020, and the sequel, Sweet Paradise, in the following year. My wicked sense of humour is drawn to creating bizarre characters who find themselves in crazy situations. Crime writing gives me the opportunity to reflect on the absurd and fragile nature of life, while having a blast at the same time.
Then life threw a curve ball…
After the unexpected death of my husband, I started keeping notes about the grief process and have written a memoir titled Death and the After Parties which was released in 2020, sharing my story of getting through grief.
I live in a sea-side suburb of Muizenberg, on the Cape South Peninsula of South Africa, close to the city of Cape Town where the action of my novels and non-fiction takes place. I blog about my life, and also love chatting with writers about their books and writing.
